Room to Think
Tuesday, October 13, 2009
While we often hear stories about what a blight we humans are on this planet, we can also make fabulous contributions to aesthetic beauty. Great architecture is one such contribution and while the prevailing modern attitude prefers architecture that hides or at least blends into its environment, the Home NZ magazine BMW Home of the Year, by Mitchell Stout Architects, does no such thing. It stands as an emphatic statement reminding us that architecture is capable of hugely enriching its location.

Auckland, 13th October
- Mitchell Stout Architects have gained something of a reputation for being ‘thinking’ architects – that is they are known for bringing an uncommonly cerebral attitude to their work. This made them a perfect fit when their future clients, an academically inclined couple, came knocking. The couple had a unique idea that drew the architects to the project. “They wanted a room to think in,” says David Mitchell. “We’d never been asked for one of those before.” [More ...]
Form that doesn’t conform
Tuesday, September 15, 2009
Architect Uche Isichei designed this radical Wellington house for one of the team at Weta Digital and his wife. While Isichei started the project using traditional architectural models, the client’s passion for technology lead to Isichei adopting Graphisoft’s ArchiCAD software.

Wellington, 15 September – Architecture in the Wellington suburb of Seatoun has traditionally been quite conservative, which didn’t sit well with the creative couple that commissioned Uche Isichei to design their new home. Isichei’s groundbreaking design has turned quite a few heads locally, even gracing the pages of the autumn edition of Houses NZ. [More ...]
Stepping up
Tuesday, August 18, 2009
They say a lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client, so what of an architect who designs his own house? Architect Paul Barry’s self-designed house on a Wellington hillside certainly dispels any similar notions with its clever layout and considered design.

Wellington, 18 August
– After returning with his family from Latin America, architect Paul Barry began looking for a site to build a home. It was just before Christmas – not usually the best time to be looking for property – when he came across a Wellington housing development in receivership. [More ...]

3D Transfer between ArchiCAD and Revit Structural

The uptake of new technology is not always smooth, but when something works well and provides a clear benefit, architects usually come around pretty quickly. ArchiCAD’s IFC file transfer capabilities fall into this category and more and more architects and engineers are using IFC to exchange 3D data.

Art for Tauranga’s sake
Wednesday, July 22, 2009
Much of New Zealand’s national identity emanates from the success of its smaller centres. Tauranga, for example, relies on its summer holiday traffic and port as its primary raison d’être. These factors, along with the thriving kiwifruit business, keep Tauranga’s economy going, but the community needs public spaces like the striking new art gallery to give it a unique identity and make it a desirable place to live.

Tauranga, 22 July – It might be a scenario out of a new Thomas Crown Affair screenplay – a 1960s bank, repurposed as an art gallery. But the story here doesn’t involve a daring heist, but rather a daring piece of design, as architects Mitchell & Stout transformed an old BNZ building from the 1960s into a visually rich, contemporary art gallery. Yellow Treehouse Restaurant
Tuesday, January 20, 2009
The Yellow Treehouse restaurant was the brainchild of an Auckland advertising agency. The idea was to show that just about anything could be done just by using the services Yellow offer – including building a restaurant up a tree. But since its construction, the treehouse has taken on a life of its own, capturing imaginations both here and around the world, as it spreads across the Internet.
Auckland, 20 January 2009 – The Yellow Treehouse restaurant was built on a north-facing site near Warkworth. But this was no ordinary site – it was 10 metres up a 40-metre redwood tree. Architect Peter Eising says his team took into account many unusual considerations when selecting the tree and figuring the logistics. [More ...]
Mountain House, Hawera
Monday, January 05, 2009
The name “Mountain House” evokes an image of a rugged dwelling built high on the mountainside. In contrast, the project name for this NZIA Resene Local Award winning house was aptly derived from the home’s relationship to the landscape vista that it frames.
Auckland, January 5th 2009 – Positioned on an almost flat, exposed, south Taranaki site, each room in this north facing home is designed to capture views of Mt. Taranaki.[More ...]
